Kat's Mindset Musings

The Messy Bits are the Gold

Aug 07, 2026

I don't think dog sport is really about dog sport.

Somewhere along the way, it became something much bigger than that for me.

I still love the training. I still love the challenge. I still love stepping into the ring with a dog I've poured my heart into.

But these days, I'm far less interested in collecting titles than I am in who I'm becoming on the journey towards them.

The wins. The championships. The photographs where everything looks as though it has fallen perfectly into place.

Those moments are real, and I'm incredibly proud of them.

But they have never felt like the whole story.

What has always fascinated me is the murky middle.

The training sessions that raise more questions than they answer.

The moments when I've doubted myself.

The times I've felt like an imposter.

The days I've driven home wondering if I have any idea what I'm doing.

The conversations that gently unravelled assumptions I didn't even know I was carrying.

The tiny moments of breakthrough that probably wouldn't mean anything to anyone else, but somehow changed everything for me.

Because, over the years, something shifted.

Dog sport stopped being just about dog sport.

It became one of the greatest teachers I've ever had.

Not because it taught me how to train dogs.

But because it taught me about myself.

It showed me how quickly fear can replace curiosity.

How easy it is to start believing that our worth is tied to results.

How much courage it takes to stay open when things don't go to plan.

How often the greatest growth begins with saying, "I don't know."

People often ask me about training methods.

Of course they matter.

But there is another question that has become far more important to me.

How does this feel?

For me.

For my dog.

Does this feel connected?

Does it feel joyful?

Does it feel kind?

Or have I become so focused on the outcome that I've stopped listening to what my dog—and my own heart—are trying to tell me?

Because I don't believe great partnerships are built through certainty.

I think they're built through curiosity.

Through courage.

Through integrity.

Through learning to trust ourselves.

And learning to trust our dogs.

Competition can be a wonderful thing.

It can also be a place where our deepest insecurities come to the surface.

The fear of not being good enough.

The desire to prove ourselves.

The comparison.

The politics.

The feeling that we have to earn our place.

Our dogs don't create those pressures.

We do.

And then, without meaning to, we carry them into the ring.

That is why my greatest goal has never been to create perfect performances.

It has been to create a relationship where my dogs know, without question, that they are loved whether they win or lose.

That they never have to perform to earn my affection.

That they never work because they fear what will happen if they don't.

That if we walk into a ring together, we do it because we both want to be there.

I don't write because I think I've found the answers.

I write because I'm still walking the path.

Still learning.

Still changing my mind.

Still discovering that the most important lessons rarely come from certainty.

They come from staying awake.

If you've followed my journey for a while, thank you for walking alongside me.

And if there's one thing I hope you take from anything I share, it isn't a training technique.

It's permission.

Permission to ask better questions.

Permission to trust yourself a little more.

Permission to trust your dog a little more.

Permission to choose connection over ego, courage over comfort, integrity over approval, and love over fear.

Because one day these precious dogs won't be beside us anymore.

When that day comes, I don't think I'll be thinking about scores or podiums.

I'll be hoping that I loved well.

That I listened.

That I stayed curious.

That I was fully present for the extraordinary privilege of sharing my life with them.

I hope that's the journey we're all on together.

With love,

Kat 💛🐾
